The value of continuous collision training: Insights from Shane Desrosiers

March 18, 2026

As vehicle technology continues to evolve, collision repair professionals must evolve with it. Ongoing education is essential to maintaining safe, accurate, and manufacturer-aligned repairs. Shane Desrosiers of Parr Autobody, and I-CAR Canada instructor, shares his perspective on the importance of continued training, the value of I-CAR Canada programs, and the responsibility of guiding technicians toward safe, quality repairs.

What would you say is the importance of continued collision training?

If you are not staying current with collision training, it does not take long to fall behind. Collision repair is a fast-paced industry where repair techniques, materials, and vehicle technologies are constantly evolving. Ongoing training ensures technicians understand updated original equipment manufacturer (OEM) procedures, properly use specialized equipment, and can safely repair increasingly complex vehicles. It also reduces the risk of errors and rework. Continuous education keeps technicians sharp, engaged, and accountable to high standards, ensuring repairs restore not only appearance but vehicle safety and performance.

Why should technicians and companies consider I-CAR Canada training?

I-CAR Canada training ensures technicians stay current with modern repair techniques and use equipment properly. As vehicles become more complex, standardized training aligned with industry best practices and OEM requirements is essential. For technicians, it reinforces core skills and builds confidence in performing safe, accurate repairs. For companies, it supports consistency, quality control, and operational efficiency. Investing in training demonstrates a commitment to professionalism and continuous improvement, helping shops remain competitive and prepared for evolving vehicle technology.

What is the most important aspect of being an I-CAR Canada instructor?

The most important aspect is being knowledgeable in the trade and clearly demonstrating how to perform a safe, quality repair. An instructor must understand current procedures, materials, and equipment while translating that knowledge into practical, easy-to-apply guidance. Demonstrating proper techniques and reinforcing OEM requirements helps technicians confidently apply what they learn in the shop. The goal is to support safe, consistent repairs and uphold high standards across the industry.
