Corrosion protection and collision repair

When a vehicle is repaired after a collision, corrosion protection can be disturbed. This can have a negative impact how long-lasting those repairs are. Untreated corrosion hotspots created during the repair process can lead to corrosion and potentially the repair failing. Taking the right precautions, however, can help maintain and restore corrosion protections during the repair process.

Original equipment manufacturers (OEM) frequently provide specifications around corrosion protection restoration that generally include:

  • Seam sealer
  • Adhesives
  • Foam fillers
  • Cavity waxes

OEM recommendations usually cover how and where corrosion protections should be used before, during and after repairs are done. While some recommend their own product lines, others recommend third-party products. Some guidelines leave the choice up to the service provider, so long as the product specifications meet those laid out in the recommendations.

As with any repair process, always follow the OEM repair procedures when it comes to corrosion protection. Use the right protection for the situation at hand to make sure the repair is done completely and safely to avoid the potential for premature failure.
